What Meta's AI Restyle Feature Does for Instagram Stories

preview.jpg

Meta launched an AI feature called Restyle for Instagram Stories that lets you transform the visual style of a photo before posting it by providing a text prompt that describes the look you want. The AI then redraws your image to match that description. The feature rolled out in the EU in early 2026 and is gradually expanding to other regions.

Key facts at a glance

  • Restyle transforms photos using a text prompt before posting to Stories
  • Available in the EU since early 2026, expanding to other regions gradually
  • Works with still images only, no video support
  • Mobile-only feature, not available through the Instagram API
  • Storrito users can apply Restyle on their phone first, then upload to Storrito for scheduling

How to Use Instagram's Restyle AI on a Story Photo

You start by selecting a photo for your Story, and in the editing screen a Restyle option appears alongside existing filters and editing tools. Tapping it opens a text prompt field where you describe the visual style you are after, with examples like "watercolor painting," "vintage film," or "pencil sketch."

The AI then generates a new version of your image in that style. It keeps the composition and subject matter of your original photo while changing the visual treatment entirely, and you can preview the result before deciding whether to use it or try a different prompt instead.

The feature only works with still images since video is not supported, and the output quality depends on both the complexity of the prompt and the clarity of the original image.

Restyle Availability by Region

Restyle launched first in the European Union, which is unusual because Meta typically rolls out experimental features in the US or Brazil before expanding to EU markets. The EU-first approach may be related to Meta's broader push to demonstrate AI transparency and user control in response to the AI Act, although Meta has not confirmed its reasoning publicly.

Availability outside the EU is rolling out gradually, so if you do not see the option in your Story editor yet, it may simply not have reached your region.

How to Use Restyle with Storrito for Scheduled Stories

Because Restyle is a mobile-only feature inside the Instagram app, it is not available through the Instagram API. That means scheduling tools like Storrito cannot apply Restyle effects directly during the publishing process.

If you want to combine Restyle with a scheduled Story, the workflow has two paths. You can use Storrito's built-in AI image generator to create a stylized image directly in the editor, which keeps the entire process on desktop. Alternatively, you can apply Restyle to an image on your phone first, save the result to your camera roll, and then upload it to Storrito as the background for your Story.

The second approach adds a manual step, but it gives you access to both Restyle's style transfer and Storrito's scheduling, sticker, and text overlay features at the same time.

Restyle Limitations for Brand Content and AI Labeling

Restyle is not a filter in the traditional sense. It regenerates the image rather than applying an overlay, which means fine details can shift or disappear in the process. Text in the original photo may become unreadable and faces may look slightly different, so if brand accuracy matters you should check the output carefully before posting.

Meta has not yet confirmed whether Restyle outputs will automatically receive an AI-generated content label. Given Meta's recent enforcement of AI disclosure rules for ads it would be reasonable to expect some form of labeling, although the policy for organic Story content is not yet as strict as it is for paid placements.

Q and A

Can I use Restyle on videos? No, the feature is limited to still images only.

Does Restyle work with Storrito directly? It does not, because Restyle is a mobile-only feature in the Instagram app. You can apply it to an image on your phone and then upload the result to Storrito for scheduling.

Will Restyle change my original photo? No. The original stays in your camera roll and Restyle creates a separate new version.

Is there a limit on how many times I can use it? Meta has not published a usage limit so far. During the initial rollout, some users reported being able to generate multiple variations without running into any restrictions.

Can I combine Restyle with other Story features? Yes. After applying Restyle you can still add stickers, text, polls, and other interactive elements as usual before posting your Story.
