
TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube all require some form of AI content disclosure as of early 2026, but the rules differ enough across platforms that teams publishing the same content in multiple places need a way to track what requires a label and where.
TikTok is the strictest. It requires a visible label on any content that uses AI to generate or significantly alter realistic depictions of people, and it enforces this with automated detection through C2PA Content Credentials and invisible watermarking. Failure to disclose triggers immediate strikes, with penalties escalating to permanent monetization bans after four offenses.
Instagram follows Meta's broader AI labeling policy. Creators must disclose AI-generated content when posting, and Meta adds its own "AI info" labels to content that its systems detect as synthetically generated. The enforcement is softer than TikTok's. Meta has not published a comparable strike system, and the penalties for failing to self-disclose are less clearly defined.
YouTube requires creators to flag AI-generated content manually through a disclosure checkbox in the upload flow. The requirement applies to realistic content that could be mistaken for real footage. YouTube has stated it may restrict or remove content that misleads viewers, but the enforcement cadence is slower and the penalty structure less transparent than TikTok's.
The simplest way to handle this across a team is a per-video checklist completed before scheduling. It does not need to be a separate tool. A shared spreadsheet column or a note field in your scheduling platform works just fine.
For each video, answer three questions before publishing.
If the answer to the first question is no, skip the rest. If the answer is yes, the disclosure method changes per platform. On TikTok, it is the "AI-generated content" toggle in the posting flow. Teams that produce content once and distribute across three or four platforms benefit the most from this workflow. The risk is not that a team intentionally skips disclosure. Solo creators who post to one or two platforms probably do not need a formal checklist. But any team with more than one person involved in the publishing process should have one, because the person editing the video is often not the person uploading it.
