Today: How does the new Sensitive Content Control work on Instagram?
Key facts at a glance
Over the years, Instagram has introduced a lot of features which let you shape your experience on the platform to meet your needs. For example, you can restrict someone from interacting with you, turn off comments, hide your Stories from specific followers, or hide the likes under your posts.
All these settings aim at enhancing the user's well-being while using the platform. Not surprisingly, Instagram also has options about the content users see so they don't feel offended by it.
To control this aspect of the platform, Instagram offers Sensitive Content Control. Here is how it works.
The feature controls how much sensitive content you see in your Explore tab.
Usually, the Instagram algorithm decides what is shown to you in your Explore tab. Instagram's Recommendation Guidelines determine what kind of content makes it there. Periodically clearing your search history is another way to influence what the algorithm thinks you want to see.
But just because content doesn't break the rules of the social network doesn't mean that it won't potentially be upsetting to some people.
Instagram defines this content as 'posts that may be sexually suggestive or violent.'
Because every user has a different taste, Instagram wants to let people decide for themselves over what they see and what they don't see.
You can easily change the Sensitive Content Control settings for your profile.
Here you can choose from three different settings. The default setting is Standard.
Instagram defines it with these words: 'You may see some photos and videos that could be upsetting or offensive.'
You can also choose More. The description says: 'You may see more photos and videos that could be upsetting or offensive.'
If you want to see fewer photos or videos that may be upsetting, you can choose Less.
You can always change the settings in your Sensitive Content Control to your liking. Instagram only makes an exception for the accounts of minors. They don't have the option to choose More. People under 18 can only choose between Standard and Less.
