What Is The 2FA Secret Key And Where Do I Find It

The 2FA secret key is the long key Instagram gives you when you add an authenticator app. Storrito stores it so that Storrito can generate your Instagram login codes itself, for example when a scheduled Story posts while you're away from your phone.

The secret key is not the 6-digit code

The code your authenticator app shows changes every 30 seconds. The secret key is what that code is calculated from, and it never changes. It is 32 characters long, made up of capital letters and the digits 2 to 7, and Instagram usually shows it in groups of four, for example ABCD EFGH IJKL MNOP QRST UVWX YZ23 4567. You can paste it into Storrito with or without the spaces.

Where to find the key on Instagram

Instagram lets you add several authenticator apps to one account, each with its own key. The simplest way to get a key for Storrito is to add one more entry. Your existing authenticator app and your colleagues' apps keep working.

Step 1: In the Instagram app, open your profile, tap the menu and go to Settings and privacy, then Accounts Center. On a computer, open accountscenter.instagram.com.

Step 2: Tap Password and security, then Two-factor authentication, and choose the Instagram account.

Step 3: Tap Authentication app. If two-factor authentication isn't on yet, choose Authentication app and continue. If it is already on, you see a list called Connected devices. Tap Add.

Step 4: Instagram shows a QR code with the key underneath, or a Copy key button. If Instagram tries to open an app on your phone instead, choose Set up another way. Copy the key.

Step 5: Paste the key into Storrito. Storrito shows a 6-digit code. Back in Instagram, give the entry a name you'll recognise later, for example "Marketing Tools", then enter the code to finish adding the entry.

If that entry is later removed from Connected devices, Storrito's key stops working and the account can disconnect with a missing 2FA secret error. Add a new entry and save the new key in Storrito to fix it.

Where to enter the key in Storrito

There are two places, and both accept the same key:

  • Instagram Accounts panel: click the account name, and under Two-Factor Authentication paste the key and click Save.
  • While connecting an account: on the login screen, open Advanced Options and paste the key into TOTP Secret Key (Optional).

As soon as the key is valid, Storrito shows a 6-digit verification code. If it matches the code in your authenticator app, you have the right key. If Storrito says the key is too long or contains characters it does not allow, you have most likely copied a login code or a backup code instead of the key.

Why Storrito asks for it

Scheduled posts log in to Instagram without you. If Instagram asks for a 2FA code at that moment and Storrito has no key, the post fails and the account can show as disconnected with a missing 2FA secret error. With the key saved, Storrito answers the code itself and the connection survives.
